Message from the Co-Chairmen (Fall, 2002)

We are pleased to restart publication of the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America’s (LHSFNA) quarterly newsletter in this new magazine format. We hope you will find it more lively and useful than our old design.

The new format goes along with some new focus. Of course, the Fund is designed to serve the common interests, with regard to the health and safety of the workforce, of both labor and management. For this, effective communication between the Fund and those responsible for health and safety programs is vital. Thus, important targets of LHSFNA communications must include the LIUNA business agents, the health and welfare fund administrators/trustees and the signatory employers and their safety managers. These are the individuals who actually secure the projects or run the programs that directly benefit the membership.

We hope these audiences will find the format and content of this publication useful and that you will provide feedback as to how we can better improve this service.

We also want to take this space to announce some changes in our Fund’s leadership. We are very sorry to have to report that George A. Miller, Vice President Emeritus of the Mason Contractors Association and the Management Co-Chair of the LHSFNA for more than ten years, passed away last spring. He will be greatly missed. We will be forever grateful for his service and, especially, for the leadership he provided in bringing management together with labor to advance the health and safety interests of LIUNA members and signatory employers.

We are happy to report, however, three recent gains for the Fund, announced officially at our April board meeting. First, Noel C. Borck, Executive Vice President of the NEA—the Association of Union Contractors, has been appointed the new management Co-Chair. In addition, Francis X. McArdle, Managing Director of the General Contractors Association of New York, Inc., has agreed to join the Board as a management trustee, and Rocco Davis, Vice President and Regional Manager for the Pacific Southwest region, has joined as a labor trustee.

With our new board and leadership in place, we look forward to the opportunities ahead.
