Skin Cancer Protection: It’s More Than Sunscreen

Solar Protective Clothing: Do You Know What to Wear?

Alternate description

LHSFNA Management Co-Chairman Noel C. Borck

Whether you're involved in outdoor construction work or simply enjoy being outside, this is the time of year when you're frequently out in the sun," says LHSFNA Management Co-Chairman Noel C. Borck. "While the Fund's Sun Sense campaign emphasizes the need to use sunscreen, wearing solar protective clothing is just as important."

Hats

At an outdoor construction site, attach a neck flap to a hardhat to cover the back of the neck and a visor for the front of the face. Off the clock, wear a hat with a wide brim extending at least three inches all the way around to shade not just the face and scalp but the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Clothing

At work and during leisure time, wear clothing that covers as much of the body as possible and take cloth and color into consideration. Synthetic and semi-synthetic fibers (such as polyester and rayon) offer the greatest sun protection by not letting light through. Fabrics in dark, bright colors like red and black work best. Make sure clothing is loose and comfortable.

Sunglasses

Whether at work or at play, when outdoors, wear sunglasses that cover the eyes, eyelids, and as much of the surrounding area as possible. They should come with a tag verifying that they block 99-100 percent of all UV radiation.
