2009 Work Zone Awareness Week Links and Resources
Work Zone Awareness Week – this year, April 6th - 10th – provides an opportunity to coordinate local activities with the Federal Highway Administration’s national media and public relations campaign.  This year’s theme is “Drive to Survive – Our Future is Riding on It!” 

During a previous Work Zone Awareness Week media event, cones representing driver and worker fatalities are arranged on the Mall in Washington, D.C.

Local unions, signatory contractors, training centers and others can enhance this national effort by using the week to write letters-to-the-editor in local papers, publish announcements in local newsletters and conduct focused, refresher training for Laborers and crews about to enter the summer roadway maintenance and repair season.

  • The tenth annual national media event is planned for Tuesday, April 7, 2009, between Washington, D.C., and Virginia near the Boundary Channel Humpback Bridge Replacement Project.
  • The 2009 FHWA Fact Sheet has a new road safety audits newsletter, pedestrian forum, key intersection safety resources and more.
  • The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse produced a new web section for backovers and has numerous resources on work zone safety.
  • The Roadway Safety Program was recently updated with new modules and interactive demonstrations. For a free download, visit www.workzonesafety.org.
  • The FHWA has a special website for its Work Zone Mobility and Safety Program.
  • The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)’s Highway Work Zone Safety site includes fatality investigation reports, construction vehicle lists and more.
