Nutrition & Fitness

Nutrition and fitness are a vital part of maintaining a long, successful career in construction. Almost 40 percent of U.S. adults are obese and more than 80 percent of adults don’t meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. As a whole, Americans eat less than the recommended amount of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and dairy products. In addition, the typical American diet exceeds the recommended intake levels for added sugar, sodium and saturated fat.

Impact of Poor Diet and Inactivity

Poor dietary habits and inactivity can lead to carrying excess weight and increase risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Addressing Nutrition and Fitness

Individual behavior is only one piece of the puzzle. Employers can encourage behavior changes and a healthier workforce by creating a supportive and inclusive environment. This may include offering healthy and nutritious options in break rooms, vending machines and meetings. Employers can also host classes, seminars and challenges related to physical activity or healthy eating. Subsidized consultations or health coaching with a registered dietitian, personal trainer or other vendor can also help further support members in achieving their goals and making lasting behavior changes.
