Lifelong Laborer, John Penn, Joins LHSFNA Board
On May 1st, John Penn, LIUNA’s newest Vice President and Midwest Regional Manager, was appointed as a Labor trustee for the LHSFNA.
“John has been a Laborer for more than 40 years,” notes LHSFNA Labor Co-Chairman Armand E. Sabitoni, “and safety has always been a vital interest. For example, he’s been on the Illinois Department of Transportation Highway Safety Committee since 1979. His commitment and experience will be invaluable additions to our Fund’s leadership.”
Coming from a long line of LIUNA members, Penn joined LIUNA in 1965 and is a member of Local Union 362 in Bloomington. In 1994, he was elected Business Manager of the Great Plains District Council. It was from that position that he was nominated by General President Terence M. O’Sullivan and elected to the LIUNA Executive Board to succeed Ed Smith, who retired to become President of ULLICO, Inc., effective May 1st.
Penn’s reputation for community involvement is well-known. Most recently, he served as Co-Chair of the Children’s Christmas Party of Unemployed Families. His many past endeavors have earned substantial recognition. He received a Presidential Points of Light Award from President Clinton and was identified as Person of the Year by the Bloomington Pentagraph. He has been active in business and government projects, serving as a member of the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board and as Vice President of the McLean County Economic Development Council. He has also been the Chairman of the McLean County Democratic Party since 1984.
John is a 1979 graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union Program. He served in the U.S. Air Force, with assignments in Korea and Viet Nam. He and his wife Mary have one daughter and three grandchildren.
