Health & Safety Regulatory Update

  • OSHA’s silica rule for general industry goes into effect on June 23rd. This standard includes many of the same requirements present in the construction industry rule, including requirements to use dust controls to reduce exposures below the permissible exposure limit (PEL) and provide respirators when exposures can’t be reduced below the PEL. For more information on reducing occupational exposures to crystalline silica, contact the Fund’s Occupational Safety & Health Division at 202-628-5465 or visit www.lhsfna.org and click on Publications.
  • Enforcement of OSHA’s beryllium standard for both the general and construction industries begins on May 11th. This includes enforcement of the new lower eight-hour PEL and short-term exposure limit (STEL).

OSHA Releases Database of 10 & 30-Hour Outreach Trainers

Our April issue of Lifelines covered recent changes to the required teaching elements in OSHA 10 and 30-hour courses. Now OSHA has released an online database of authorized outreach trainers, which is searchable by industry, name, city and state. To find a trainer in your area, go to www.osha.gov and type “find a trainer” in the search box.

Individual Mandate Still in Effect for 2018

You may be aware that recent tax reform removed the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, which required adults to have health insurance or pay a penalty. However, this change doesn’t go into effect until 2019. For more information about how to handle potential lapses in health care coverage, order the Fund’s pamphlet ACA Q&A: Intermittent Eligibility & Enrollment by going to www.lhsfna.org and clicking on Publications.
