Confined Spaces Training Requirements (1926.1207)


  • Provided to each employee covered by the standard at no cost
  • Employer must ensure training is effective
  • Training must cover:
    • The hazards of the permit space
    • Methods to isolate/control/protect from the hazards
    • Dangers of attempting a rescue if not an authorized entrant
  • Training must be:
    • In a language and vocabulary the employee can understand
    • Before first assigned duties
    • Before a change in duties
    • Whenever there is a new hazard the employee has not been trained on
    • Whenever there is a change in the entry procedures or when inadequacies in employee knowledge about procedures occur
  • Training must establish proficiency and introduce new/revised procedures as necessary
  • Training records must be kept throughout the duration of employment and available for inspection
